2007 National LMI Forum
"The Power of LMI - A Roadmap to Canada's Changing Labour Market"
Labour market information (LMI) is regarded as an important resource in helping deal with the diverse challenges of today's and tomorrow's labour markets. Whether an employer on the West Coast is looking to fill an increasing number of vacancies or an individual on the East Coast looking for a suitable career path, LMI is a useful tool. It is instrumental for assisting with important labour market-related decisions made by a variety of users, including individuals (e.g. students, employed, unemployed, foreign- or domestic-born), employers, educational and training institutions, as well as the various service providers who offer assistance for their clients.
Federal, provincial and territorial governments have been working together for several years to jointly improve the LMI system in Canada. Many improvements have been made to labour market information, tools, products and services over the years, and we continue to explore and develop new or more cost-effective ways of developing and delivering accurate information in a timely fashion, tailored to the needs of the users. However, as Canada is a country with diverse labour market realities that can vary from one province to another or even from one sub-region of a province to another, attaining this ambitious goal is an ongoing challenge.
In seeking to expand the dialogue beyond its government partners, the Forum of Labour Market Ministers' (FLMM) Labour Market Information Working Group (LMIWG) is co-sponsoring, with the Province of Manitoba, the fifth National LMI Forum, February 12th-14th, 2007 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The theme of this year's Forum is: "The Power of LMI - A Roadmap to Canada's Changing Labour Market". The overall objective of the Forum is to discuss the various facets of LMI that make it a powerful resource for individuals and organizations to use when planning or making decisions about issues such as jobs, careers, education, skills development, moving (within Canada, or to/from other countries), recruitment and retention.
The FLMM's National LMI Forum brings together national and international experts on LMI, including academics, researchers, practitioners and policy makers. In addition to the scheduled presentations, the Forum will also feature an exhibit space, where organizations can showcase their work in LMI. Participants will have an opportunity to explore recent findings, discuss challenges and identify priorities in the LMI field.
Specifically, the Forum will examine various streams of LMI, including:
- Global trends in LMI
- Demographics and their impacts on the labour market
- Impacts of labour market shortages e.g. how employers are changing the way they recruit
- Inclusion of Aboriginal People, Persons with Disabilities, and Newcomers
- Measuring impacts of LMI
- Tailoring LMI, from the client's perspective
Forum participants are encouraged to explore the "Festival du Voyageur", an annual event held in Winnipeg, which runs from February 9th - 19th in 2007. For more information, please visit: www.festivalvoyageur.mb.ca.
