Gareth is Director of Advice Services at Ufi/learndirect.He is a labour market economist by training.

He joined the UK Government Economic Service in the 1980's and spent time working in the Manpower Services Commission, and the Departments of Employment and Education. In 1993 he became head of adult guidance policy at the Deparetment for Education and Skills, and in 1998 was seconded to the team established to set up the University for Industry (Ufi), the UK's first major investment in distance based careers advice and learning since the creation of the Open University in the 1970's. Ufi's services are promoted to members of the public through the brand learndirect, and the learndirect careers advice service now receives 800,000 calls each year and 250,000 web enquiries every week.
