Providing Lists of the "Best" Occupations: An Example of Making Labor Market Information More Useful for Clients
"Clients often have trouble making sense of the labor market information that we find so fascinating. We can help by presenting the information in formats with which clients are comfortable. A good example is the "best" list - e.g., best movies of 2006, best cities to live in, etc. No single set of criteria can determine the "best" occupation for every person. Nevertheless, good income and a good chance of being employed are among the most important criteria for many people. Therefore, one way to start the process of career exploration is to focus on occupations that meet these criteria and then address other important concerns, such as interests, personality type, or educational aspirations. The presentation demonstrates a systematic procedure for using information about basic economic factors to perform a first cut of the world of work."
